Cyberpunk’s animated “Edge Runners” prompted Cyberpunk 2077 players to return to the troubled RPG game, which was released in 2020
When CD Projekt Red’s latest open-world game launched in late 2020, players were shunned by several bugs. A storm of negative publicity in both the press and the player community.
Since then, the developer has put a lot of work into “Cyberpunk 2077. But with the release of “Cyberpunk Edge Runners” on Netflix, players may finally be ready to return to the game.
According to CD Projekt Red, after Edgerunners debuted on September 13. One million players visited the Night City every day the following week. Judging by Cyberpunk 2077’s Steam player data. This number is still rising, with the past three-day player count peaking at over 80,000. And this excludes the GOG version and those playing on consoles.

Of course, this is a far cry from the 1 million concurrent players that Cyberpunk 2077 recorded on Steam alone in the first few days after launch. But it is far above the numbers that have been trending since then. The number of concurrent players briefly spiked after the 1.5 patches in late February but remained in the 15,000 range for most of the summer.

Edgerunners coincided with another major update to Cyberpunk 2077, patch 1.6, which added some bonus content drawn from the animated series and a much-requested wardrobe transformation system.
We also learned a little more about the first DLC expansion. “Cyberpunk 2077” will take V into a “spy thriller” set in an entirely new district of Night City when it launches in early 2023.

The weak initial impact of “Cyberpunk 2077” dictated the following year’s game scenario. But I believe it could have been much different. Perhaps Edgerunners will catalyze a major change in how we think about and discuss this fascinating game.
