Here’s a special announcement for all old-school First Person Shooter fans: a 1995 prototype build/tech demo of 3D Realms’ “Prey” has been leaked online. This allows PC gamers to download and run it on their PC systems.
For those who don’t know, 3D Realms was working on “Prey” back in 1995. Before Quake 3 Arena made such an attempt, Prey took full advantage of portal technology. And while the team could never create a complete game, they did develop a prototype build and a technical demo.
This prototype can be downloaded here. Also, more information about this leak can be found below.
“This is an early prototype of the game Prey by 3D Realms from November 1995.
You can pass the map name as an argument at startup, i.e., “prey demo4”, or you can start it once with “prey” and then press the TAB key to open the console and type “load demo4”.
You will also notice that several demos (DMO files) are available and can be played with the ‘play ‘ command.
You can change the display mode with W – the default is wireframe mode; L activates auto-leveling; X turns left, C turns right; A and Z move up and down; C turns left, D turns right, and A and Z move up and down. And as mentioned, TAB opens the console.”
