The early access version of Manor Lords is like a combination of Braveheart and Banished.

City-building/colony management games tend to include minimal if any, combat. And in games that focus on large-scale infantry combat, settlement management is usually abstracted as background. But that’s no longer the case; Manor Lords is a medieval village-building game that also offers the large-scale combat of Total War.

Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible and utilizes it in the gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Avoiding generic representations of the Middle Ages and prioritizing historical accuracy results in a more authentic, colorful, and believable world.

Surprisingly, “Manor Lords” is the work of a single developer. Starting from scratch in a medieval manor, farmers cut down trees and built thatched-roof houses to create a bustling little settlement in the wilderness.

The trailer shows players can lay out roads and buildings to their heart’s content, eventually constructing more advanced stone and plaster buildings. You can also zoom in on the ground, watching chickens fleeing from horse-drawn carts and observing workers cleaning clothes and attaching thatch.

Your village must support your army, and this is where it gets truly Total War-esque: Manor Lords features massive real-time battles in which formations of archers, infantry, and cavalry clash in a beautiful, ancient field rendered in Unreal 4.
