This year, several northern U.S. states could see a white Christmas, with as many as 16 states expected to see snow during the Christmas period.

Much of the U.S. has already been affected by the unusual blizzard that began in the week leading up to Christmas. Although the blizzard is expected to pass by Christmas Eve, snow and freezing temperatures are forecast for much of the country through Christmas weekend.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines told USA TODAY, “Christmas Day is going to be a lot quieter than the days leading up to Christmas.” Christmas Day itself, he said, “is not so bad, considering things.

Caines added that this year would be “a big difference” from last year when much of the country did not see snow on Christmas.

What is a white Christmas?

A white Christmas is simply defined as snow on Christmas Day or snow on the ground. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association define a white Christmas as having at least one inch of snow on the ground.
