The odds of “Man of Steel 2,” or whatever it is nicknamed, actually coming to fruition have increased dramatically.
After the shocking announcement from Netflix that Henry Cavill would be leaving after three seasons as Geralt of Rivia in “The Witcher, there was immediate speculation about the reason for Cavill’s departure.
Some could argue that The Witcher gave his career a second wind. We will not debate such theories or the pros and cons of Liam. Hemsworth is taking over the role (the author has never seen an episode of The Witcher before).
Earnest as Superman
But we will state here what seems incredibly obvious to us. Cavill will almost certainly leave the series to return to the DC Universe in earnest as Superman.
Henry Cavill made a cameo appearance in the end credits of the long-rumored. “Black Adam” in full Kal-El gear. This is the first time Cavill has played Superman since filming wrapped on “Justice League” in 2017.
Around the same time, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that fan favorite is James Gunn. The Director of the films “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Suicide Squad” and creator of “The Peacemaker. will be playing Superman in DC announced that he will be one half of the new team that will take over DC’s film and television universe reborn as a studio.
The perception is that Gunn knows these comic universes like he knows his morning coffee preferences. It will bring much-needed creative focus and energy to the DC Extended Universe. Which has been troubled and directionless since the collapse of the Snyderverse.
Cavill immediately quit the show in 2021
And just like that, Cavill immediately quit the show in 2021. Telling the Hollywood Reporter that he would “absolutely” stick with it for seven seasons if he could make it that far.
We guess that Cavill had a meeting or phone call with director Gunn and producer Peter Safran. They officially begin work as co-chairs of DC Studios on Tuesday, November 1. perhaps they have big plans to bring Superman right back to the forefront of the DC film universe. I suspect they were informed that they have a plan to properly bring Superman back to the forefront of the DC film world.
Since Cavill’s debut in the original “MoS” in 2013, there have been mostly rumors of a “Man of Steel 2” for years. That plan fizzled out as Warner Bros. rushed to organize Justice League.
Batman v Superman
Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Rise of Justice” and Justice League. were rushed through to form the Justice League, leaving a proper standalone follow-up to “Man of Steel” in the dust.
But speculation about a Superman sequel has not decreased. Gunn was even offered the job at one point (he accepted “Suicide Squad” instead). Cavill never let go of the possibility of playing the role again, even as his career blossomed with The Witcher.
It was released in December 2019, putting Cavill back on top of the genre A-list. And recent reports indicate that the new Warner Bros. regime is eager to revive the project.
Cavill also promised in a new interview with podcaster Josh Horowitz (via People) that the next iteration of the Last Son of Krypton will be “tremendous fun,” perhaps even more so than the brooding, gloomy, reluctant super. He said it would be more in line with Christopher Reeve’s beloved take on the hero.
If it comes to fruition, will the film be titled “Man of Steel 2? Something else? And can Gunn, Cavill, and the rest of the creative team actually, as Cavill said? Create a new and revitalized Superman who enjoys saving the planet.
For now, all remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that the day is not far off when DC fans will be drinking the tears of the “Witcher” faithful.
